A Japanese painter, Reiji Hiramatsu, 79, who is a honorary director of Yugawara Art Museum, has been awarded Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Government of France this March. The award is given to artists who have made outstanding achievements in the arts in France and the world. Recently a Japanese comic artist, Akira Toriyama, was awarded the same award too.
After he found a letter signed by the French Minister of Culture in his studio in Kamakura, he couldn't figure it out exactly. The letter informed him of his award and made his a bit confused. "I have never expected that I got a letter like this from France", he said.
He was invited to a conferring ceremony in French embassy and given the award by the French ambassador. The Government of France praised him because of his poetic art works which are impressed by arts of Monet, and his promotion of the relationship between France and Japan.
Mr. Hiramatsu was born in Tokyo, 1941, and have received many and great awards in the arts. In his middle 50 age, he visited Paris to hold his first exhibition in Europe, and saw Water-Lilies of Claude Monet in the Orangerie Museum. The Monet's work impressed him and made him excited. He got interested in the fact why Monet had adored Japanese arts, especially Ukiyoe. After that, to learn more about Monet, he visited France every year and have painted many works including paintings with water lilies as motifs. These his works have been highly praised in European countries, and exhibited in some authoritative museums in France and Germany.
Mr. Hiramatsu said "Some Japanese cultures, for example Ukiyoe and Manga, are so popular in France, but early modern Japanese paintings are not known. So I'm glad that French people have got interested in Japanese recent arts through my paintings".
His exhibition has been held in Yugawara Art Museum until June 28th, 2021.
