Harvesting of plum fruits began in Soga plum grove in Odawara on May 23rd.Soga has been well-known for its plum trees since around the 14th century, and there are so many farmers growing plums.
According to a farmer, Kazuo Hoshino, who is a head of Odawara Plum Research Association, this year's expected harvest of plums in Soga is 350t. It is the first bumper crop in 8 years since 2013, and 2.5 times more than last year's poor crop that was around 140t.
One of the causes of the good harvest is that there are many days of warm weather this year. Because of it, a kind of plum for making plum wine, Shirakaga, began to bloom a week earlier than normal. Average weight of a plum is 6.33g, which is bigger than usual.
Mr. Hoshino said, 'Many people still worry about the impact of the coronavirus, I hope they enjoy making plum wine, plum jam and plum syrup at home.'
