A strange plant was found in Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands.
There is no records that this plant was brought to the Botanical Garden, a staff said.
This 110 cm tall plant has a red and large bract at the top. According to a curator, this is believed A. kiusianus because of its external characteristics.
However, he said "A. kiusianus grows wild in warm regions such as southwestern Japan and Taiwan. I don't know why it grew wild in Hakone".
He guesses that its seeds were possibly brought with a bird that ate the seeds, or there might be some seeds attached to fallen leaves and curators put the leaves in the garden.
Unfortunately, this mysterious plant's stem was broken due to so heavy rain and strong storm at the beginning of July 2021. But some staffs took its seeds before the storm came and planted. The curator said they found about 30 seeds sprouted!
He hopes that they grow them and many people visit and enjoy the plants in the future.
