Wrapped buses in Togendai station in Hakone
Collaboration event between a popular animation, Evangelion, and Hakone won the gold prize in the category of Regional development of the first Kyoto Ani-monozukuri Award, in September 2021.
Evangelion is so popular animation worldwide. The main stage of Evangelion, called "Tokyo-3", is modeled after Hakone. A railroad company called Odakyu Hakone Holdings that manages transportations in Hakone started the collaboration event with an Animation studio making Evangelion in January 2020. Their target is to promote tourism for Hakone by attracting many people worldwide.
In the collaboration event, some buses that Odakyu Hakone Holdings manage running in Hakone and Odawara have been wrapped with design of Evangelion. Also a ropeway station, Tougendai station, in Hakone was decollated with the special design of the animation and a big figure of a character of Evangelion was put.
Not only transportations, but also a hot spring facility in Hakone, Yunessun, that Fujita Kanko manages, collaborated with Evangelion.
Although COVID-19's great impact on tourism started from 2020, this collaboration event has made many people interested in visiting Hakone.
A staff of Odakyu Hakone Holdings said, "Many body could enjoy so much in spite of COVID-19's impact. We hope to start a new plan soon". Fujita Kanko's staff mentions, "We are so grad because preparing this event were very tough. I want to promote Hakone tourism more for the future."
